As the founder and the first Band Mistress of TK Band, Ms Irene Joseph led the band in victory not only on the field, but in creating a tradition of excellence.

Under her guidance and leadership, there were many firsts in the history of TK Band, and the local band scene. Belphegor became the signature tune of the band, making it the first song that every Secondary One student learns upon joining the band. Many of TK Band’s innovative and eye-catching outdoor performances were also created.

The band won its first Mace of Honour in 1972 – an award then given to only the top three school bands every year. The same year, TK Band performed in the National Day Parade for the first time. In 1975, the band won its first best drum major award.

With deep respect and love that generations of band members have for her, she is often referred to as the “mother of the brood” and a “pillar of strength”.
